Best Friends Day

Best Friends Day is a holiday celebrated on June 8th all over the world. It is a day you can take to let your very best friend know just how much they mean to you. You can do this by sending your best friend a card or a gift, or by using the day for the two of you to do something together. After all, what joy would there be in life without your best friend?

History of Best Friends Day

While no one can precisely place their finger on the origin of Best Friend’s Day, some people believe that it started in 2002 in Richmond, Virginia. According to this origin story, several artists and musicians – who just so happened to all be best friends – decided to have a party at a local water park. However, they wanted to do a little more than just have their friends at this party.

They wanted something bigger. They wanted a celebration of epic proportions. One that would blow the proverbial roof off of the water park. This is when they decided to create Best Friends Day and advertise it to the rest of Richmond so everyone could invite their best friends and partake in the festivities too. Which seemed like a really good idea. However, what they didn’t know was that this fun “holiday” would quickly bloom into one that would soon be observed by best friends all over the world.

Thanks to the Internet, which was just beginning to hit full stride at the beginning of the 21st century, the word of their holiday spread all over the globe. Social media sites and message boards carried the story of their holiday and pretty soon it caught on with a whole lot of people. Ever since its creation, it has been celebrated on June 8th.

Best Friend’s Day Customs & Celebrations

The ways to celebrate Best Friends Day are as numerous as the people who are celebrating them. Some people decide to take their best friend to their favorite water park. Other people throw a party or BBQ in honor of their best friend. Another way to celebrate the day is for people to give their best friend a gift or card or take them out to dinner.
