International Beer Day

Celebrated on the first Friday of every August ever since 2007, International Beer Day is a day that is celebrated all over the world.

The purpose of this holiday is for friends to gather together and enjoy some beer together, to celebrate those who brew and serve beer, and to celebrate the beers of all nations. Although this holiday started out as a small local event, over the years it has spread to all six continents.

History of International Beer Day

Originally conceived by Jesse Avshalomov in 2007, International Beer Day is a holiday that was founded by Aaron Araki, Evan Hamilton and Richard Hernande in Santa Cruz, California. They then convinced their local bar to celebrate it and even made a website for it as sort of a thanks to the beer industry.

However, what they didn’t realize was how fast it was going to take off. Almost immediately, they starting receiving emails from people who found the website and held their own celebrations – some of them as far away as Africa and the UK. Today, International Beer Day is celebrated on 6 continents in almost 60 countries and over 210 cities.

From its original conception to 2012, International Beer Day was always celebrated on August 5th. However, that changed in 2013 when a poll of the fans suggested that the first Friday in August would be better. It’s now celebrated on the first Friday in August.

International Beer Day Customs & Celebrations

There are a number of different ways to celebrate International Beer Day. One, you can get a group of friends together and you all can sample beers from other countries. Two, you can thank and tip your bartender for their service, and three, you can drink a beer from another country that you wouldn’t ordinarily drink.

Other ways you can celebrate this holiday include giving the gift of beer or attending one of the International Beer Day events close to you. If there isn’t an IBD event, then perhaps you can start one.
